viking clean up green up
Our SET-BC special project is called the Viking Clean Up Green Up and here is a summary of our proposal:
The students that attend this program are already involved in several aspects of helping make our school "green." We do a weekly paper chase throughout the school and bi-weekly collection of bottles and cans. We would like to expand our clean and green initiatives to include managing the distribution of fresh fruit and vegetables through the BC School Fruit and Vegetable Nutritional Program, educating our peers on making better beverage choices ("Sip Smart BC"), running a school compost and hopefully one day, a vegetable garden. These new projects will give us the opportunity for further inquiry into healthy eating and reducing our impact on the planet as well as supporting the life skills students in developing valuable employable skills.
The long term goal is to have students create a series of presentations to share information on healthy eating and helping the environment in a way that is accessible to them. These presentations would also showcase the data we have collected through our initiatives and our target audience would include Valleyview peers, administration, the PAC and other community groups.
At the end of my project I would like my students to be able to demonstrate the very measurable and significant contribution they make towards healthy living and environmental initiatives at their school while also adding to their own knowledge base and skill set. I believe that by using accessible technology my students will be able to enage and educate their peers in mainstream classes about how to live a healthier and greener lifestyle, hopefully breaking down social barriers and fostering the development of new peer relationships.
